Demos
See how each part of Motiontone works, in live documents you can open, play and change. Nothing you change in a demo is saved.
Animation
Keyframes, timing, and the things that move a layer on their own.
- Keyframes: make anything moveKeyframes pin a value to a moment, so a layer moves from one to the next, in time with the music.Open in the editor
- Stagger: which copy moves firstStagger sets the order in which copies start their animation.Open in the editor
- Trim: draw a line onTrim shows part of a shape's outline. Animate it and the line draws itself on.Open in the editor
- Retime: play animation faster or slowerRetime changes how fast a layer plays its keyframes: slower, faster, backwards or frozen.Open in the editor
- Repeat: after the last keyframeA repeat mode sets what a property does after its last keyframe.Open in the editor
- Rigs: reach, aim and swingA rig poses a figure from a few handles: arms reach, lights aim, parts swing behind.Open in the editor
- Property links: one layer follows anotherA link makes one layer's number follow another layer's, so it moves without keyframes of its own.Open in the editor
- Write On: text that writes itselfWrite On draws text letter by letter, the way a pen would. The text stays editable.Open in the editor
- Echo trail with a wiggleA wiggling word with a trail, built from a modulator, an Echo and a link.Open in the editor
Music
Layers that follow the beat, the loudness, or the notes of a song.
- Audio modulators: move with the songA modulator adds the song's loudness, or a steady wave, on top of a property's keyframes.Open in the editor
- Per letter: a band per letterSpread the song's frequencies across a text layer, so each letter jumps with its own part of the sound.Open in the editor
- Readouts: numbers from the songA readout makes a text layer show a live number: the song's level, the level of one frequency band, the beat count or the clock.Open in the editor
- Spectrogram: the song as ringsA Spectrogram fill draws the song's frequencies over time: rings for time, the circle for pitch.Open in the editor
- Trace: a scrolling level lineA Trace fill draws the song's loudness as a line scrolling across, like a heart monitor.Open in the editor
- Spectrum: bars that follow the songA Spectrum fill draws the song's frequency bands as bars, a curve or dots, along a line or an arc.Open in the editor
- Oscilloscope: draw a sound's shapeAn Oscilloscope fill draws audio as a glowing beam, left channel against right. Simple tones make clean figures.Open in the editor
- Songs: move to the beatAdd a song and keyframes land on its beats. Audio modulators move layers with the music.Open in the editor
Copies and patterns
One layer made into many: grids, rings, trails and scatter.
- Array: one shape, many copiesArray turns one layer into many copies on a grid, a ring or a line.Open in the editor
- Variation: vary each copyVariation changes one property across the copies an Array or Echo makes: size, turn, color and more.Open in the editor
- Echo: a trail behind a shapeEcho draws copies of a moving layer as it was moments earlier, leaving a trail of ghosts.Open in the editor
- Transform: order decides what turnsTransform moves, turns or scales a layer. Above Array it turns each copy; below Array it turns the whole row.Open in the editor
- Variation: below the copiesA Variation changes copies that already exist, so it only works below the modifier that makes them.Open in the editor
- Variation: alternate a random scatterWith a Random curve, Alternate flips every other copy, turning a scatter into a zigzag.Open in the editor
- Effector: change copies in a regionAn Effector moves, turns, scales or fades copies by how close they are to a region.Open in the editor
- Align to Path: follow a shapeAlign to Path lays copies along another shape's outline, each turned to follow it.Open in the editor
- Particles: a field of copiesParticles scatters copies of a layer's shape across its box, for confetti, snow or sparks.Open in the editor
Shapes and fills
Combining, cutting and bending shapes, and what paints them.
- Dancing WavesRows of wavy lines that ripple in time with the music.Open in the editor
- Combine: cut and join shapes liveCombine joins shapes or cuts one from another, and stays live as they move.Open in the editor
- Deform: skew, bend, twist, bulgeDeform warps a shape's outline. Stacked Deforms apply in list order, so order changes the result.Open in the editor
- Outline stroke: line to shapeA stroke cannot cut other shapes. Outline stroke turns it into a filled shape that can.Open in the editor
- Fill: one paint for a layerA Fill row paints a layer with a color or gradient; its row order sets what it covers.Open in the editor
- Offset Path: grow or shrinkOffset Path pushes an outline out or in by one distance, so thin parts thicken instead of scaling.Open in the editor
- Color variation over a photoA Variation's colors tint a photo fill instead of covering it, so the picture shows through.Open in the editor
- Gradient strokes: across or alongA stroke's gradient can run across its width, along its length, or over the whole box.Open in the editor
- Sweep gradients: color around a pointA sweep gradient runs its colors around a point: for loaders, radars, pie charts and sunbursts.Open in the editor
- Gradient Space, Interpolation and TurnsSpace sets what a gradient spans, Interpolation how colors blend, Turns how often a sweep repeats.Open in the editor
Generators
Whole pictures made from a few settings: tunnels, planets, stars.
- Turbulent noise: a cloud fillTurbulent noise fills a shape with moving clouds of light and dark, for smoke, fog and fire.Open in the editor
- Earth: a turning planet fillEarth fills a shape with the turning planet: real coastlines, sunlight and an optional moon.Open in the editor
- Wave Terrain: a pond of linesWave Terrain fills a shape with rippling water in lines, seen in perspective. Drops land on the beat, and the song can set its height.Open in the editor
- Static: TV snow as a fillStatic fills a shape with TV snow: random gray cells, redrawn on a clock you set.Open in the editor
- Portal: a tunnel of ringsA Portal fill draws a tunnel of rings rushing toward you, with light pulsing through them.Open in the editor
- Metaball: spheres that mergeA Metaball fill draws soft 3D spheres that melt into one shape as they meet.Open in the editor
- Lattice: a grid of pushed marksLattice fills a shape with a grid of marks, pushed around by rings, a bulge or noise.Open in the editor
- Starfield: speed and warpStarfield fills a shape with stars. Speed flies them toward you; Warp stretches them into streaks.Open in the editor
Text
Type on a path, per letter, in outline, and in motion.
- Source Text: words on the beatKey a text layer's words so each group appears on its beat. Made for lyrics.Open in the editor
- Text on a path: any shapeSet a line of type along any shape's outline. Reshape the shape and the words follow.Open in the editor
- Vary letters, words or linesOn a text layer, modifiers can vary each letter, word or line on its own.Open in the editor
- Bend, draw on and thicken textOutline modifiers bend, draw on or thicken a headline, and it stays editable text.Open in the editor
- Cascade by: copies or lettersCascade by sets whether a headline's animation steps through its copies or through the letters in each.Open in the editor
- Letter wave: a traveling waveMake a headline wave letter by letter and still move it freely.Open in the editor
- Tables and type: a tour listA table lines up dates, venues and cities in columns.Open in the editor
- Zoom through typeA photo masked by a word, and the word scaled up until the photo fills the poster.Open in the editor
Masks and layers
What shows through what, and where a layer sits on the board.
- Mask: show through a shapeA Mask shows a layer only where another layer paints, like a photo inside a shape or type.Open in the editor
- Mask and Array: stack orderMask above Array gives every copy its own window. Mask below Array puts one window over all the copies.Open in the editor
- Adjustment layer: grade what is belowA shape that draws nothing and grades every layer below it, inside its outline.Open in the editor
Effects
Blur, glow, grain, light and the rest of the effects rack.
- Effects: the poster rack in turnEffects that act on the whole poster, like halftone, dither and riso, each turned up in turn.Open in the editor
- Blur: soften or streak a pictureBlur softens a layer evenly; Radial blur streaks or spins it around a sharp focal point.Open in the editor
- Choke: round, roughen or erode edgesChoke blurs a layer and cuts it sharp again, to round corners, fatten or thin a shape, or give it a grainy, boiling edge.Open in the editor
- Grading: color, blur and duotoneColor correction, Blur and Duotone grade a photo, and the order of the rows changes the result.Open in the editor
- Glow: one bloom, three halosGlow spreads light out of a layer's bright parts; Shape makes the halo Round, Streak or Cross.Open in the editor
- ASCII: a picture made of charactersASCII redraws a layer, or everything below an adjustment layer, as a grid of characters.Open in the editor
- ASCII: the poster in charactersASCII redraws your whole poster, text included, as a grid of characters, denser where it is darker.Open in the editor
- Disintegrate: blow a layer awayDisintegrate breaks a layer into motes that blow away on a wind, and back again when you scrub backwards.Open in the editor
- Disintegrate: the whole posterIn the Effects tab, Disintegrate blows the whole poster away as dust, clip and text included.Open in the editor
- Gust: blow a layer apartGust sheds a layer into specks on a wind, thrown by the beat or by hits in the song.Open in the editor
- Pixel stretch: pull pixels into bandsPixel stretch pulls one row of a picture out into a long band, like a glitch.Open in the editor
- Glass: any shape as a paneGlass makes a shape or text bend whatever sits behind it, like ribbed, bubbled or frosted glass.Open in the editor
- Warp: ripple a pictureWarp bends a layer's pixels through smooth noise, like a reflection in water.Open in the editor
- Liquify: smear pixels with a brushLiquify pushes a layer's pixels around with a brush, like wet paint, and the strokes stay editable.Open in the editor
- Light rays: shafts from a layerLight rays make a bright layer cast shafts of light; layers in front cast shadows.Open in the editor
- Spotlight: a light you can aimSpotlight darkens the poster outside a pool of light: a vignette at rest, a beam once moved.Open in the editor
- Scanlines: a picture in bent linesScanlines redraws a layer as rows of lines or dots, bent by its brightness.Open in the editor
- Beams: lasers and stage lightsBeams turns a small layer into a stage light: lasers or soft cones that sweep and change color.Open in the editor
3D and camera
Layers turned in space, depth, and a camera that looks at them.
- Camera: depth and parallaxA layer's Depth sets its distance from the camera. Far layers draw smaller and slide behind near ones.Open in the editor
- Haze: far layers fade awayHaze tints layers toward one color the farther they are from the camera.Open in the editor
- 3D layers: turn a flat layerTilt, Turn and Spin swing a layer out of the poster's flat plane, so it leans away like a card.Open in the editor
- Copies in depth: a ring tunnelOffset Z pushes each copy farther from the camera, so a row of copies becomes a tunnel.Open in the editor
